City Council met Thursday, Aug. 24

The Harrison City Council met on Thursday night, Aug. 24, and heard an update from Assistant Police Chief John Cagle.
“We’ve had a very productive month. Our day shift officers are focusing on bus stops and enforcing school zones. Our night shift officers are watching for DUIs. Both shifts have done well,” Cagle said.

COO Wade Phillips gave an update about the Maplewood veteran’s marker project, the weir, and Camp Jack and the Capps Road sidewalks. “We’ve been waiting on some utilities to move before we can proceed.”

The NICA bike race will be this weekend, with 700 participants on the Northark Campus. Mayor Jackson added, “So that means we will have about 2,000 additional people in town this weekend. It will be nice for all our businesses and restaurants.”

CFO Luke Feighert reported that sales tax numbers are still up, and accounts are above budget. The council talked about paying off the bonds faster if revenues stayed up.

Mayor Jerry Jackson said, “We could not have built this building at a better time with financing under 2%. It is amazing.”

Mitch Magness added, “This is such a blessing for our town, and we appreciate the citizens voting for it.”

Scott Tennyson, market president for Arvest Bank, informed the council about two important events coming up on Sept. 7.

Hospice House is celebrating its 30th anniversary; Tennyson said, “Mayor, we know it was you who came up with the slogan ‘Twenty is Plenty’, and for this anniversary, we are saying, “Thirty is worthy.”

The Hospice of the Hills celebration will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with a brief presentation at 5:15.

Then Tennyson mentioned a sneak peek of the new MedPlaza will be on Sept. 7, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mayor Jackson wrapped up the meeting with a Creekside Community Center update. “All three phases are moving well. The inside could be done within 30-60 days, but we will wait and open the whole project when the aquatic center is ready. So everything should be ready to go in the spring.”
