Jackson presents ‘State of the City’

Mayor Jerry Jackson presented his State of the City address to the community and City Council on Thursday, Feb. 22. He will make the presentation again at a presentation hosted by the Harrison Regional Chamber of Commerce and Black Hills Energy on Thursday, March 14, at 7:30 a.m.

Jackson commented on the 2023 completed projects, which enabled city and state funds to be spent on community projects:

  • Basketball and Tennis Courts, Adult Softball fields

  • Turf on baseball and softball fields, covered bleachers in process

  • Widening, updating Hwy. 43/65 Intersection

  • HEART Committee establishing three bike trails

  • Updating and improving downtown lights

  • New equipment was purchased for Fire, Police Departments, and Public Works

  • Capps Road Sidewalks

Projects underway for 2024 funded by city and or state funds

  • Goblin Drive Roundabouts

  • Bryan Properties (private company adding housing)

  • ARDOT Highway Projects; Airport Rd., Walmart Intersection, NARMC/Hester Dr.

  • Downtown Beautification Project

We have some great things happening in our community. Our sales tax revenue is still doing well, and the Harrison sales tax rate remains one of the lowest in the state. Our cash reserves are currently at 6.30 months, higher than the state requires. We will be spending some of those reserves on the music venue and additional projects the community needs. With Creekside opening, new businesses, and housing projects this year, Jackson said 2024 will be an excellent year for Harrison.

The public is invited to the State of the City hosted by the Harrison Regional Chamber of Commerce and Black Hills Energy at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, in the City Council room at City Hall at 118 Industrial Park Road. Mayor Jackson and the department heads will give a presentation, giving additional information about the state of the city. The breakfast is free, but reservations need to be made. Call the Chamber at 870-741-2659.
