Let’s talk: To burn or not to burn …
During a recent burn ban and lifting of such, several questions were asked of our department, and we wanted to get the information out to our citizens
The City of Harrison regulates open burning within its limits with an ordinance. The ordinance states that open burning must be approved by the Harrison Fire Department and that anyone wishing to perform burning must obtain a permit prior to ignition.
Permits are issued or denied based on weather conditions (wind, humidity, drought or dry conditions, etc.) and must be obtained the day the burning is planned. Burning after dark is not allowed.
The only items allowed to be burned are small limbs and leaves. Per State Law, burning of any trash, rubbish, trade waste, etc., is prohibited.
(NOTE: The only exception to the time and permit requirement is recreational fires.)
Any fire must be no closer than 50 feet to any structure, unless the pile size is three feet or less in diameter and two feet or less in height, then it can be 25 feet from a structure.
Any open burning will be extinguished if it becomes a nuisance and/or danger to anyone.
During a county-wide burn ban, no open burning is allowed (recreational fires included), and the Harrison Fire Department does not allow any burning during a burn ban issued by the County Judge.
For permits and/or questions, you may call 870-741-6384.
