Improving safety with surveillance cameras
Upon taking office as Mayor of the City of Harrison in 2019, I observed that the alleyway behind the former City Hall, where officers bring suspects, was poorly lit and lacked any security cameras. This was a serious safety concern for our officers, staff, and the public.
Additionally, we had issues with graffiti on the back wall, but without cameras, we had no way to identify the perpetrators. We promptly installed surveillance cameras in the alley and throughout City Hall. Here are some clear outcomes of our enhanced camera system:
Identifying Criminals: Shortly after the installation of cameras, a goose was killed in the park. We could identify and hold the perpetrator accountable thanks to the newly installed cameras.
Reducing Break-ins: The youth center experienced frequent break-ins — almost daily. Once cameras were installed, the break-ins stopped entirely. (Similarly, during the construction of Creekside, we faced repeated break-ins, including incidents where fire extinguishers were discharged maliciously. With the installation of cameras, the vandalism stopped immediately.)
Flock Cameras: We’ve invested in advanced Flock cameras positioned strategically along highways. These cameras identify license plates and car models in real time. This technology allows us to collaborate with law enforcement across state lines. For instance, we’ve successfully intercepted vehicles transporting drugs from Mexico. We’ve assisted in apprehending murder suspects passing through Harrison. In just the past two years, these cameras have led to multiple arrests of serious offenders and significantly enhanced regional safety.
Body Cameras and Car Cameras: We’ve updated all body and car cameras, ensuring our officers are equipped with the latest technology during every interaction. These cameras protect officers from false accusations and provide transparency during incidents. In recent cases, body camera footage has proven officers acted professionally and appropriately. While some may express privacy concerns, the reality is clear: these safety measures have been critical in reducing crime and protecting our community and officers.
The data demonstrates that strategic use of cameras can deter crime, provide evidence when crimes occur, and help prevent serious offenses from escalating.
