Parks update
Harrison Parks and Recreation Director Chuck Eddington presented his report to the City Advertising Tourist Promotion Commission (CATPC) on Thursday, March 27.
“This is our 36th year for the Ozark Classic Tournament. At one point last weekend, we had more than 2,000 people at the Sports Complex. This is a three-weekend tournament, so you still have a chance to watch some great baseball and softball. This past weekend, we had a total of 16 teams. This coming weekend, we expect another 16 teams to play one game on Friday and two on Saturday. One of the coming teams already has their pitcher signed with the University of Tennessee. The hotels and restaurants will be full, and that’s good for business.”
Eddington gives the late John Phillips and recently retired Jerry Farmer the credit for the success of this tournament. “After 36 years, we are doing something right, and schools like to come to our fields. The turf is excellent, and our staff does a great job keeping everything nice.”
“To watch the games, it's only $5 a day. The new parking area, which holds 25 buses at a time, has given us much more room. We have the cheapest prices on concessions, so come and spend the day,” he said.
“Just around the corner, on April 12-13, we will have 45 baseball and 100 basketball teams here simultaneously. The Complex and Creekside are going to be busy. We also have a swim meeting set for June 7. We had our first volleyball tournament at Creekside a few weeks ago with 40 teams.”
“Our Spring Break – Schools Out program has grown from 20 kids in the past to 60 this week. And we currently have 3,700 regional members at Creekside – it’s not just Harrison people,” Eddington said.
“We appreciate the community for their support as these guests come in. We are working hard for you,” he said.
